Open Question: Long road trip advice?

My husband and I are taking a road trip from southern Mississippi to the southwestern border of South Dakota. We are moving due to the military. We will be driving over a period of 5 days, and have a puppy. We will only be bringing like a TV, and a blow up mattress with us on the trip.
